In Star Network Topology, You use Multiple devices .Devices connected to the central 
connection point is known as HUB & SWITCH.The devices are attached to the hub by either copper cables or fiber optic cables.Star Network Topology provides a cost-effective method for sharing information between different users.Star Network topology can be used in airlines reservation counters and small business offices where employees want an access to common applications and files. 


When you use Star Network topology, Each devices is connected point-to-point to a central device which is either a hub or switch.Hub Manages and control all the functions of the network.We use as the multi port repeater for data flow.Hub is used to connect segments of LAN and contains multiple ports.Hub can be passive or active.Passive hubs are used as a connection point which routes all the traffic towards the devices .it does not amplify or regenerate the signals.They simply take all of the packets they receive on a single port and broadcast them across all ports.Active Hub contains electronic circuits that regenerate and re transmits the information.Active hubs all of the features of passive hubs ,with the added feature of actually watching the data being sent out.Active hubs take a larger roles in Ethernet communications by implementing a technology called store and forward where the hubs actually look at the data they are transmitting before sending it. Also it repairs a certain damaged packets.

When you send data from your system ,Data is passed through the hub before reaching the destination.For Example ,Device 1 wants to transmit the data to device 2, Device 1 first sends data to the hub.If the hub is passive ,it rebroadcast the data to all the devices in star network,except device 1.
Each device has to read the address specified in data to determine if the data is intended for that device.If the address is different ,then that data is discarded.If the hub is active it regenerate the data before it is rebroadcast.

A physical Star Network Topology that uses  a certain hub operate as per logical Bus Network topology.The Hub broadcast data to all segments and thus uses a Bus Network Topology for transmission of the data.On other hand ,a physical Star Network Topology using switch function as per star network topology.This is because the switch has a capacity to read the address mentioned in data and to direct the data  to the intended receiver. Advantage of Star Network Topology:

  • You can face problem when you increased devices causes traffic which makes the network slow.
  • You have to require more cables length than a linear topology.
  • Your hub failure leads to the network failure.
  • It is more expensive.

In Bus network topology ,devices share a common backbone cable to send and receive data.A co-axial cable is used to connect all devices.Bus Network Topology always uses daisy chain scheme to add more devices in a network. In this scheme one device is connected to another ,another to next.The First & last terminating point connect 50 ohm terminator resistor.


In Bus network topology,the main server is connected at one end of the backbone cable and the other device is connected different positions along the backbone cable known as Trunk.At both end of Bus Network Topology is connected to terminator which helps to terminated the unused data signal.It is very useful in destroying unsent data to from the cable if the destination is faulty.In this Bus Network Topology sends data to all the devices which is connected to the dedicated lines.For example, If PC-1 Sends data to PC-4 ,then the data which is sent from PC-1 is sent to all the PC which connected with the backbone cable or dedicated lines.When messages arrives at each device , it checks the destination address ,encoded in the message. If the address matches arrives the data.If the address is not matched ,the device ignore the data.Due to this a number of devices waiting to send data on the bus are more.This result is slowing down the performance of  a network.The basic structure of the bus network topology is shown :

In Bus Network Topology,the devices are not responsible for data transmission from one device to another .They can only listen to information sent on a network.If one device fails,it doen't affect the entire network.In an active topology,devices regenerate signals and take part in transfer of data: Hence, if one device falls then the  entire network is affected.
Every Device on a network shares a common cable.When two machines transmitted data at the same time the signals collide.Due to this,the information is destroyed.The process is called collision.Collision can affect the performance of the network.


Bus Network Topology, is also called as a liner bus.It is the simplest and common method of computer networking.However,Bus Network best with a limited number of devices.

Advantage of Bus Network Topology:

  • Easy to connect the devices to linear Bus.
  • Requires Less cable & cost efficient.
  • Less Expensive than other topology .
  • Work better for smaller network.
Disadvantage of Bus Network Topology:
  • Entire network gets affected if there is a break in the main cable
  • Terminators are required at both ends of the backbone cable.
  • You face Difficulty to detect the faulty devices.
  • Limited number of devices can be attached.
  • Heavy  traffic and addition of devices degrades the performance.
  • Expensive than single node topology.
